Cancer Protection

The diet is still a fundamental tool for the prevention of cancer. But what mechanisms link the quantity and quality of foods to cancer?

First is the amount to be put on trial. An epidemiological study from Harvard Medical School in 1995 on the relationship between overweight and cancer, showed that the highest incidence of bowel cancer occurs in people who do little exercise.

It was recently demonstrated a higher incidence of tumors of the breast and corpus uteri in overweight and obese women, the breast cancer being overweight raises the risk as high as 50%. Why?

In the case of bowel cancers there are two assumptions: a diet results in an abnormal pattern of excessive levels of insulin and at the same time promotes the inflammatory processes. The peaks of insulin, after a hearty meal, act as growth factors of tumor cells, while inflammation is the ideal environment for the proliferation of malignant cells.

Which brings us to the quality of food. There are four oriental natural substances involved in scientific research: green tea, soy, ginseng, some types of mushrooms. Experimental data in laboratory animals and epidemiological studies are unanimous in considering green tea an important factor in preventing cancer, especially that of the skin. The substance which plays such a function is a phenol with an unpronounceable name: epigallocatechin-3-gallate. It is not enough, however, a single cup, maybe in the morning; in the East it consumes at least a liter a day.

As for soy, isoflavons are being studied as some drugs used in the prevention of recurrence of breast cancer ( selective modulators of estrogenic receptor, or SERMs), they have the ability to act as weak estrogens with positive results in the menopause and probably for the prevention of breast cancer.

Research on ginseng is working hard and it is believed that its regular use can prevent various forms of cancer.

Finally, the “ganoderma lucidum“, mushroom highly valued by Koreans, Chinese and Japanese; it is the focus of renewed scientific interest for its ability of stimulating the immune system and inhibition of leukemia cells. And after the East, the West. Olive oil, grapes and broccoli: food so common but very interesting in their capacity as chemopreventive sources of cancer.

The journal “Carcinogenesis” recently announced the synthesis of new compounds derived from squalene (which is rich in shark cartilage) to be tested in cancer prevention.
